Who We Are... The People of San Diego.
The people of San Diego demand energy choice as fair and timely competition to San Diego Gas & Electric. SDG&E has enjoyed a monopoly status to create one of the most costly utilities in the United States. An alternative energy supplier for the people will force SDG&E to maintain accountability for the network that delivers the energy.
Compounding negative experience is the company's 2011 effort to tax rooftop and commercial solar with its Network Use Charge. On 19-January-2012, the Public Utility Commission rejected the effort as illegal. Now, SDG&E is seeking a change to State Law to make it legal.
The Foundation seeks a sustainable and robust grid and is therefore aligned with SDG&E on this point. However, it makes no sense to retroactively impose a fee on existing customers who have made a 20 year investment in solar. The 5% Net Energy Metering Cap is therefore sacrosanct. Beyond 5%, there will be Net Metering Energy reform.
Leaders in the solar industry, government officials, and activists are organizing the San Diego Energy District to become a significant and effective provider of clean electricity ... for the people and by the people. The Foundation advocates and organizes for the creation and operation of this District.
