Rear Admiral Leendert “Len” Hering Sr. (U.S. Navy, retired), has a passion for educating people on the benefits of sustainability and the dangers inherent in ignoring these opportunities. As Executive Director, Center for Sustainable Energy, he leads an organization that showcases the technologies, applications and benefits of the sustainable energy economy. Retired after 32 years of service, while in the Navy his team reduced energy consumption by nearly 42%, diverted 75% of Navy landfill waste, reduced water consumption by over one billion gallons, and instigated wind, thermal, photovoltaic and conversion technology at all levels in Navy facilities. In 2009, he joined the University of San Diego as vice president for business services and administration, where he oversaw USD's installation of the then-largest solar system of any private campus in the country.
